Writing to learn:
The following writing samples were written during our writing block. After a week of using our sight words to create sentence stems, I let the students have at it. The sentence stem was not available for them to see, they had to identify the correct words in order to complete their sentence. Sentence structure also came from prior whole group writing lessons. The students were asked to write about a place they had previously visited.
As you can see here, my friend was able to write her sentence without any assistance from me. The underlining was made by me as she read to me what she wrote. Notice the capitalization, spacing between words and her directionality.
"I went to Target with my mom" |
Here my medium writer needed me to underline where to write the words. Although student needs to improve letter structure, student was able to partially sound out words without my assistance.
"I went to lunch" |
My friend here needs the most improvement overall. Not only did I have to underline words placement, but also had to provide student with the set of sight words we were using to write. When writing Walmart, student needed me to sound out the word very slowly and tell him which letter to write.
"I went to Walmart" |
So far, Im super proud of how well my students writing has gone so far this early in the year. They have really enjoyed our writing block, they really look forward to writing everyday. No where to go from here but up. We're gonna stick to the whole group lessons and really rely on the one to one conferencing.
